Painting of Boys Playing With Wagon
I painted this watercolor illustration for my storybook called MY BROTHER AND I. It is the story of two brothers and the activities and sports they enjoy through the seasons. Like most children, their dearest wish is to own a pet which, for now, lives in their imaginations. The illustrations for this story feature an imaginary dog who is included in all their activities. In this painting, the terrified dog is tobogganing with the boys.
I had great fun painting the illustrations for this story. I based the characters on our own grandchildren and painted details of their faces with a dry-brush technique. The flying snow behind the toboggan was painted wet-in-wet, that is dropping wet pigment and water onto already wet watercolor paper. This gives the blurry appearance of speed in the background. Other than using photos of our grandchildren's faces as reference when I painted the children, I created this painting completely from my imagination - including the dog. I guess it runs in the family.
