Freestyle Skiing Painting
There are two main disciplines of Freestyle Skiing: tricks and moguls. In this type of extreme skiing, aerialists ski off snow jumps that propel the athletes up to 65 ft. in the air where they perform multiple flips and twists like 'the Daffy', 'the heli' and triple back flips before landing. Aerial skiing requires agility, creativity, skill and above all courage.
With controled splashes of watercolor, as far as the athlete is in control of his jump, I have attempted to capture in this painting the excitement and adrenaline rush felt by the skier during this extreme aerial maneuver. I must put myself in the skier's frame of mind, recreating the action on canvas with similar "throw caution to the wind" attitude. The paint that seems to be splashed recklessly about is actually under my control in that I can protect areas where I do not want the splashes to land; however, where they do land, they react with the canvas freely and without restriction. It is as much of a rush for me to paint in this way as it is for a skier to perform such extreme maneuvers. I like to think of it as "extreme painting" - exciting, exhilarating, daring - not always successful but, when it is, I am ecstatic!
