My love for action and fascination with capturing a flash of movement in a motionless art form should be evident in my sports paintings. Only the experience itself can compare with the delight I feel when I have captured an athlete in the excitement of the moment, in the height of competition, in anticipation of the next break away. Every athlete, professional or amateur, can identify with the adrenaline rush felt in that instant portrayed in my painting. This work for me is revitalizing, refreshing, uninhibited.

The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon running event held in Boston, Massachusetts on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun in 1897, inspired by the first modern-day marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics, the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon, and ranks as one of the world's best-known road racing events. Amateur and professional runners from all over the world compete in the Boston Marathon each year, braving the hilly New England terrain and unpredictable weather to take part in the race. The event attracts about 500,000 spectators and an average of about 20,000 participants each year.

Heartbreak Hill is an ascent over 0.4-mile between the 20 and 21-mile marks, near Boston College that challenges contestants. Though Heartbreak Hill itself rises only 88 feet vertically, it comes in the portion of a marathon distance where muscle glycogen stores are most likely to be depleted - a phenomenon referred to by marathoners as "hitting the wall."
