Winter Break is a winter landscape watercolor painting featuring a snowy forest creek drenched in sunshine. Most Canadians dream of escaping winter's fury to some warm Southern climate; some are lucky enough to actually go. Yet, there are some of us who find beauty and serenity right here. The term "Winter Break" has different meanings and conjures up different images to different people.
To me it is that sudden rise in winter's biting temperatures when the warm breezes blow up into Canada from the deep south making it feel like a magnificent day in springtime. This was the case one spectacular day in January. The warm snow-melting sun cradled the woods that began to come to life with glorious almost-forgotten sounds that broke the winter silence: the chattering of chirping chicadees, the welcoming chortling of this restless winter creek, the sloshing of my own footsteps through melting slush ridges. How delightful to enjoy this winter break - however short-lived! Alas, like a movie trailer, it's only a preview to spring!
