Dog Portrait From Photo

There's something about a sleeping dog that makes you feel at home, relaxed and content. This feeling of contentment was captured in a photo by Waddley's owner. I used the photo as reference when painting the original watercolor by looking at the photograph as if Waddley were sleeping in my studio. Before beginning to paint, I completed a detailed pencil drawing on the aquarelle canvas to make sure that white areas of the painting would be kept free of paint. White paint is never used in a good watercolor painting; the white paper is left untouched in white areas of the image. Good planning and layout is essential in a detailed watercolor portrait. I welcome your inquiry into the commission of an original watercolor portrait, oil painting or acrylic painting of your wildlife photo.

I painted this portrait of Waddley many years ago and, unfortunately, the photograph that I took of the painting was done with pre-digital technology and not clear enough to reproduce as canvas or art prints.
