The contemporary vibrant colors of this watercolor painting reflect the intense concentration of the toddler in the image. Using a photograph of this little boy as reference, I did a fairly detailed pencil drawing of the child on the 300 lb. cold-pressed Arches rough watercolor canvas (my favorite) before beginning to paint his portrait. After painting the child's face, hands and clothing, I moved on to paint details of the Tonka truck. As I painted elements further away from the child, details became less important and my painting became more fluid and impressionistic.
Contemporary portraiture, like today's lifestyle, is becoming less formal and rigid now that a subject can easily be captured in a natural unpretentious composition with the aid of photography. Like most of my action paintings of children playing, this is a hand-painted portrait from photo. To be clear, I only use photographs as reference material for my original paintings, often producing detailed pencil drawings on the canvas before I paint. My portraits are hand-painted original paintings done by looking at a photograph of the subject as if the subject were sitting in my studio. They are NOT painted over top of a mechanically reproduced photograph.
