This watercolor portrait of Mason is one of four grandchildren portraits commissioned by his grandparents over the years. Each child was painted at about the same age. Although the portraits were painted a few years apart, using the first portrait as reference, I was able to incorporate a similar background into the other three paintings to suit their room decor. My portraits are hand-painted original paintings done by looking at a photograph of the subject as if the subject were sitting in my studio. You can supply me with photos of your child or I can take them for you. Vibrant, energetic action paintings with movement and life are my specialty; however, I enjoy painting portraits, especially of children, even when there is no movement involved.
I am very comfortable working in either oil, acrylic or watercolor. Before I begin a watercolor painting, like the one shown here, I usually complete a detailed drawing on the paper canvas in order that the proportions of the subject are the same as those in the photo. This is difficult to change in watercolor so I make sure the drawing is correct before I begin the painting.
