This informal action portrait of Stephanie is a quick watercolor sketch, as opposed to detailed watercolor paintings of, for example, In My Opinion or "Haley" in this gallery. With the obscured background and concentration of energy on the subject, it is clear that the focus is on the girl in this watercolor.
This watercolor portrait was painted from a photo supplied by Stephanie's parents. The camera made it possible to freeze the action so that I could look at the photo for reference to paint this portrait as if the child were frozen in that position in my studio. Using the photo as reference for details, I painted the girl's natural expression and facial features in realistic detail and blurred and faded the wind-blown hair into the impressionistic background, back-lighting on the flowing wispy hair. This creates the sensation of movement while still keeping the focus on the face.
