Like most of my paintings of children playing, this is a hand-painted portrait from photo. To be clear, I only use photographs as reference material for my original paintings, often producing detailed pencil drawings on the canvas before I paint. My portraits are hand-painted original paintings done by looking at a photograph of the subject as if the subject were sitting in my studio. They are NOT painted over top of a reproduced photograph.
For all budding artists interested in my method, here is my PRETTY IN PINK watercolor portrait painting in progress.
Step 1:Since this is a watercolor, I never use white paint. The white that you see in my paintings is always the white of the paper - I don't even own a tube of white watercolor paint- nor black, for that matter. Once the watercolor has been put on the paper, it is there to stay. That is why I complete a detailed drawing of the subject before I begin to paint. I begin by painting the skin tones, usually with yellow gambage. I add soft layers of rose madder and blue, making sure to leave highlighted areas untouched by paint.
Step 2:I continue to build layers of skin tones, adding to the depth of color. I begin working on the hair. In a watercolor sketch the hair is usually represented by a windswept wash that blows and fades into the background; however, in this case, the detailed painting that the clients requested, demanded that each curl be painted individually, a very painstaking process. As with the skin tones, I must be careful not to lose the white highlights.
Step 3:I continue to develop skin tones, hair details and facial features. I leave eye lashes and eyebrows until I am satisfied with the skin tones. Once the the payne's grey (not black) of the eyelashes is applied, any changes made to the skin tones around the eyes could smudge and muddy the area. I begin to develop the framework for the hat, making sure that the knitted splines follow the contours and textures in the photo. Subtle tones and shades of pink of the hat are developed with many layers of paint.
Step 4:I continue to develop the skin tones and details of the hat and hair, making sure to leave plenty of white highlights where the sun hits the subject. I finish the facial features, the eye lashes, the eye brows, the dark shadows of the nose and mouth. I paint the shirt and leave the dark background for last so that the subject does not blurr.
