I painted this watercolor painting called SNOW ANGELS for my children's story book called "MY BROTHER AND I" by Hanne Lore Koehler. This is the story of two brothers and the sports, games and activities they enjoy through summer and winter seasons as they grow up together. Like most children, they have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. In this fun winter scene, the children are making snow angels and, if you look closely, you'll see that the imaginary dog is making his own snow angel with his wagging tail.
We are very lucky to have two wonderful grandsons upon whom I based this story. The boys are close in age and have always played together and enjoyed each other's company, growing up not only as brothers but as friends. Like most proud grandparents, we have an endless supply of family photos that I was able to use as reference in order to keep the facial features of the characters in the story consistent. After painting details of the children and their imaginary dog, I brushed some wet blue watercolor pigment and water into the wet paper canvas to add depth to the painting and create the impression of tree shadows on the freshly fallen snow.
