Painting Of Children Playing In Snow
I painted this watercolor painting called SNOWMEN for my children's story book called "MY BROTHER AND I" by Hanne Lore Koehler. This is the story of two brothers and the sports, games and activities they enjoy together through summer and winter seasons. Like most children, they have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. Featured here are the boys building a snowman with their imaginary dog who always seems to get into trouble. In this illustration, the children rolled a snowball in the packing snow and accidentally rolled the dog into the snowball. The imaginary dog has a stunned look on his face while the children giggle. Fantasy snowmen with tassel hats and icy cold breath in the background appear to be freezing in the cold.
We are very lucky to have two wonderful grandsons upon whom this story is based. Like most proud grandparents, we have an endless supply of family photos from which I could extract my references. After painting details of the children, I painted an impressionistic background by splashing watercolor pigment and water into an already wet paper canvas to give the impression of trees and falling snow. I had as much fun creating the dog from my own imagination as, I'm sure, the children had.
