I painted this action watercolor painting of two boys and their imaginary dog called Slugger And Kicker for my story book for children called MY BROTHER AND I (written and illustrated by Hanne Lore Koehler). This story chronicles the sports and activities that two brothers enjoy together through summer and winter as they grow up. Written in first person singular from the point of view of one of the boys, the story is told in rhyme with easy flowing rhythm. Like most children, the boys have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. Featured in this watercolor painting are the boys playing baseball and soccer with their imaginary dog. One of the boys is up to bat in a baseball game while their imaginary dog is the catcher behind home plate. The other brother is playing soccer in the background.
The illustrations for this children's book are hand-painted watercolor paintings for which I used photos of our grandsons as reference. I composed the scene and the imaginary dog from my imagination, including details of the subjects and an impressionistic style for background trees and foliage.
Like many children our grandsons grew up playing in local little league baseball and soccer leagues and my husband and I went to watch many of their games. With countless photos of their baseball and soccer games and friends to draw from, the references that I needed for this painting were readily available.
