I painted this watercolor illustration for my story book for kids called "My Brother and I" by Hanne Lore Koehler. This is the story of the sports and activities that two brothers enjoy together through summer and winter. Like most children, they have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. Featured here are the boys swimming with their imaginary dog lounging on an air mattress with a cool drink in the background.
The story and illustrations are based on our two grandsons. We spent many wonderful summer days with them at the beach on the shores of Lake Huron at Grand Bend or Pinery Park. After the long two-and-a-half hour road trip to reach our destination the warm refreshing water was always a welcome relief. Fun times included picnics under a shady tree, building sand castles and, of course, swimming and playing games in the water. We would always stay to watch a gorgeous evening sunset and the kids always slept in the car on the way home. I used one of our photos as reference for this illustration. The dog is from my imagination as well as theirs.
