In this action watercolor painting, I painted the two active boys as the subjects of a watercolor portrait with detailed brush strokes to define their facial features clearly. The flying snow in the background was painted in an impressionistic style using various watercolor techniques including wet-on-wet dropping and splattering of paint and water and color absorbtion using salt crystals. I tried to portray the fun, exhilarating and challenging aspect of this exciting sport. This snowboarding action painting of two boys racing down a mountain is the "non-fantasy" version of my storybook illustration called Snowboard Super Heroes (image 4-18) in which I painted an imaginary dog.
Snowboarding was inspired by skateboarding, sledding, surfing and skiing and developed during the 1960s to 1970s becoming a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998. After competitive snowboarders formed the World Snowboard Tour in 2002, several types of competitions were developed. Today's competitive events include slopestyle, the half-pipe, and Snowboard Cross which are run in the Olympics. In the Giant Parallel slalom, boarders race against the clock weaving in and out of blue and red gates, similar to skiing competitions. In Slopestyle, competitors perform tricks while descending a course, maneuvering around, over, across, up, or down obstacles like boxes, rails, jumps, jibs.
Big air competitions are contests in which riders perform tricks after launching off a man-made jump built specifically for the event. The half-pipe is a semi-circular ramp shaped like a pipe sliced lengthwise in which competitors perform tricks while going from one side to the other and while in the air above the sides of the pipe as they descend the slope.
In Boardercross competitions, also known as "Boarder X" and "Snowboard X", 4 to 6 boarders per heat race down a course similar to a motorcycle motocross track (with jumps, berms and other obstacles constructed from snow on a downhill course). After a series of heats in which the first 2 riders in each heat advance to the next round, the winner is the rider that finishes first in the final round.
