Imagine Grandma's delight to receive a letter from her two young granddaughters decorated with pictures of flowers and butterflies. It is sure to cheer her up! The two little sisters in this country scene have just colored some pictures with their new box of crayons and decided to send their masterpieces to their grandma who lives some distance away. With a stamped envelope from mom who had also enclosed a small note, they had run barefoot acroos the wet front yard grass to the end of the gravel laneway and the country mailbox at the roadside. Tagging along was the family pet Jack Russell Terrier who stands guard as they try to reach and open the flap to place the letter inside.
Although I created the scene of this painting completely from my imagination, it is based on the many country mailboxes at countless country farmhouse laneways in our area of Ontario. Like this one, they are usually shaded by enormous old maple, oak or spruce trees that flank the sides of the laneway and lead to an old but loved farmhouse. Often, there are ruts and grooves in the gravel created by rain puddles and various tractors and other farming equipment. Wild flowers and tall grasses, farmers fields and fences and lovely flower gardens to welcome visitors to a relaxed homey atmosphere. I'm afraid that, with emerging new technology, this mailbox painting may be a bit nostalgic and soon these familiar structures that house our rural mail will no longer exist.
