Suddenly it's quiet. The distant early morning lakeshore becomes more visible through the mist with each pensive stroke. Grueling daily training for the Henley Regatta requires strength, balance, endurance and concentration to row a scull (vessel). To brave the challenge of flatwater is no less a passion. It is a pleasure to do such a strenuous workout in an early morning misty summer lake scene like this. This sculler was training above the dam on the Grand River in Cambridge as I snapped many photos which I later used as reference when painting this watercolor in my studio.
Henley Royal Regatta is a rowing (or sculling) event held every year on the River Thames by the town of Henley-on-Thames, England. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta started in 1880 as the first championship for the newly formed Canadian Amateur Rowing Association. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta has welcomed many famous spectators, including Grace Kelly, former Prime Minister The Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau and former Prime Minister The Right Honourable Jean Chretien. Competitive rowing became popular in Canada in the 1860s, and in 1880 the first Royal Canadian Henley Regatta for international oarsmen was held in Toronto. In 1903, a section of the old Welland Canal at Port Dalhousie was chosen as the permanent site for this popular sporting competition.

Using a photo manipulation program on a photograph of the completed watercolor painting, I added some digital special effects in this version of the image called A ROWER'S DREAM to create an aura of energy surrounding the rower that blends in seamlessly with the morning mist on the lake.
I recently received a request from the owner of a rowing studio for permission for a graffiti artist to use my image in a huge wall mural for his facility. Based on my original watercolor painting called HENLEY ON THE HORIZON and my digital version of this painting called A ROWER'S DREAM, the talented graffiti artist by the name of Valentino Mikalef of Graffiti Artist USA created the exciting mural above. The owner of the rowing studio in San Francisco sent me some photos of the finished mural.
In the spirit of artistic co-operation, I applied my own digital manipulation to the photo he sent to create this version of the rower called A ROWER'S FANTASY. Prints are available in SHOP FOR ART (below). What fun!
