This beautiful piece of English walnut live edge wood slab with gorgeous contours and two tones caught my attention instantly at the wood milling shop. It had already been planed and kiln dried. The shape of the light portion of the slab, which is a slice of the core of the tree, reminded me of a snail and gave me the idea to create this snail carving.

After designing the carving, I drew the image of three leaves that formed the shell of the large snail onto the wood and carved the leaves. I cut out the sections of wood between the leaves, then I carved a stylized tail to the left and snail head to the right. Then I carved two small snails separately and added them to the center leaf with glue and dowels so that they protruded from the rest of the relief carving.
