My husband, Steve, and I had to cut down a huge 18 inch diameter dead pine tree at our Cambridge Ontario home. Rather than destroy the beautiful wood in a campfire and cause more choking air polution than is already out there from wildfires, wars, fossil fuels, etc., we decided to try our hand at carving some owls. Steve did the main cuts with his big chainsaw. I did the details with a small battery operated chainsaw, chisels, grinder and sander. All three of these carvings were created from the same pine tree.
These huge goofy looking owls will not fool or scare away little birds who often sit on them. We left some bark on the wings and base for interest so the carvings would look more rustic and natural. The spring periwinkle flower bed that they are sitting in is still a little rough from trampling while making the carvings but it should fill-in in a few months. What fun!
