I took a little break from painting to create this wood relief carving to hang over our fireplace by combining two pieces of live edge wood. With the black background, it would also make a dramatic canvas art print (available in SHOP FOR ART above).
Using a variety of chisels and a mallet, I carved three salmon fish and the eagle's head into the top piece of wood. The eagle's wing feathers are carved into both the top and bottom pieces. The tail feathers are carved into the bottom piece of wood.
A fourth salmon in the eagle's mouth spans the two layers of wood. A fifth salmon hangs separately to complete the story of THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY.
I have always loved the British Columbia Haida carvings so I designed this eagle carving with their beautiful artwork in mind. This is my German-Canadian version of a Haida/Inuit carving executed with respect and reverence to their traditional works of art. Your purchase of this one-of-a-kind eagle carving will add the artistry and warmth of natural wood to your renovated and contemporary space.

This is my original eagle and salmon carving called THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY which consists of two pieces of hand-carved wood photographed with a stone background. The top piece is Catalpa wood. The bottom piece is apple wood.
My own design but greatly influenced by the amazing Haida carvers of British Columbia, this is my German-Canadian version of a Haida/Inuit carving.
