This baking mold of traditional design was hand-carved by my dad, Otto Werner (1923-1991). These wooden baking mold were hand-carved by my dad, Otto Werner (1923 - 1991). Based on traditional design with a contemporary vision, these magnificent relief carvings of stars are surrounded by an in-laid strip of metal which is designed to be a cutting tool for easy cutting of the cookie dough. Created with exquisite craftsmanship, attention to detail and design, these lovely solid pieces of wood with very smooth surface and well aged patina are now part of a New Zealand collection.
Hand-carved wood baking molds such as these, also called spekulatius molds, springerle cookie molds, Oecher Prente Form and Aachener Printen Formen, are used to shape large gingerbread cookies, Aachener Printen, Oecher Prente and springerle cookies.
Unfortunately, carving these cookie molds is something my dad only began to do in his later years. There are only about thirty of his molds in existence.
