No question about it, I needed to get this carving out of my head and into the leftover pieces of live-edge walnut wood countertop my husband had just built in our bathroom.
Since I inherited all my dad's carving tools and the wood just fell into my lap, I had no choice but to take a break from painting and try my hand at creating this five piece wood relief carving of an inukshuk. I have always loved the British Columbia Haida carvings and decided to base my carving on their beautiful designs.
I carved a cardinal into the top piece or head of the inukshuk, and eagle into his shoulders. The third carving is of a bear with owl on his shoulder. I carved a whale into each of the bear's paws. One paw reaches down to the bottom right piece where he is trying to grab a salmon on the left bottom piece.
This is my German-Canadian version of a Haida/Inuit carving.

This is my original inukshuk carving which consists of five pieces of hand-carved walnut wood photographed with a stone background.
The top piece, or head of the Inukshuk, has a carved cardinal. The shoulders of the inukshuk has an eagle carving with feathers. The third carving is of a bear with owl on his shoulder and whale carved into each of the bear's paws. One paw reaches down to the bottom right piece where he is trying to grab a salmon on the left bottom piece. It is my own design greatly influenced by the amazing Haida carvers of British Columbia, this is my German-Canadian version of a Haida/Inuit carving.
