This original watercolor sports painting was based on Olympic Pair skating performances. Pair skaters execute a variety of elements, some of which are unique to the discipline, others are elements of single skating performed in unison. Pair skating requires one lady and one man to perform a series of technical elements with similar technique and timing based on practice and trust between the partners. At competitions, the teams execute a program of predetermined technical elements such as lifts, throw jumps, spins in sequence which are judged by a panel of judges based on the degree of difficulty of each individual element combined with the proficiency of execution of the element and complexity of the sequence. My action sports painting portrays the extreme difficulty, excitment but graceful performance of a figure skating pair team.
This painting is of an Olympic figure skating pair team performing a death spiral, an element unique to pair skating. The man performs a pivot, one toe anchored in the ice, while holding the hand of his partner, who circles him on one skate edge with her body almost parallel to the ice. The outside edge death spirals are considered more difficult than the inside edge variations. The forward outside death spiral is deemed to be the most difficult of all.
