I was commissioned to paint this watercolor portrait of a magnificent home in Dallas, Texas by a dear friend of the homeowners - a thoughtful gift to be treasured. In order to complete a detailed watercolor painting like this one, I first do a detailed pencil drawing directly on the watercolor paper. All the fine details of the building are painted first, making sure that white areas of the image remain as white paper on the painting. White paint should never be used in a true watercolor painting, or aquarelle; therefore, in detailed paintings such as this, it is important to plan ahead. I only did a brief shape sketch of the fantastic landscaping around this home before applying the paint. The background trees, the lovely gardens with manicured lawn, ornamental trees, shrubs and the beautiful hanging pots of draping ferns were features not to be missed.
