This close-up of one of Nature's finest blooms begs the question: Is white really white? Different shades and nuances of color were used in the creation of this watercolor painting - but not white. As in all my watercolors, the white that you see is the paper showing through the paint. White is one of two colors I never use - black is the other. As you can understand, this takes a certain amount of planning ahead before I begin to paint. I must make sure that the white part of my image stays white either by masking it off or by careful application of my colors.
As for black paint, I find it too dead looking, too flat for my taste. The black portions of my paintings have not been painted with black at all. I prefer the vibrant deep blue tone of Payne's Gray or Indigo Blue.
