Autumn preparations for winter include storing emptied clay pots, a well-used watering can and my Wellingtons in our old garden shed. Even the fallen leaves seem to want to take refuge in this winter-safe haven. This year the annual fall chores will include fixing the bird feeder and cleaning and painting the bird houses for next Spring's new chirping families.

The rusty century-old lock still harbors its key as if clinging to "the good old days".
