A golden sunset competes with rival storm clouds for prominence in the September sky. The awesome beauty of Lake Huron is undeniable and on a calm summer day, boating and fishing are a source of pleasure for vacationers - yet such ominous dark gale producing clouds are a reminder that this, the second largest of the Great Lakes, demands respect.
Vicious squalls can appear to arise from nowhere and the deceiving allure of refuge in a bay can prove to be hazardous. The hidden sandbars, shoals and boulders of Thunder Bay near Alpena, MI were the cause of many a shipwreck and in the 19th century Thunder Bay became known as "Shipwreck Alley". An underwater marine sactuary and preserve in this area is explored by thousands of divers every year. Singer/songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot's spellbinding tale of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (which sank in Lake Superior in 1975) was the perfect background music as I painted this autumn watercolor.
