Baseball Painting
Depicting the slide into home plate, this original watercolor action painting is the preliminary work for a sports wall mural. In baseball, a slide is when a base runner drops his body to the ground in his approach to the base and slides along the ground to touch the base. This maneuver was developed for a number of reasons: to avoid a tag out, to avoid overrunning the base, and to interfere with the defensive player protecting the base. A baserunner can perform the slide into base tactic in a number of different ways in an attempt to avoid being tagged out while reaching to touch the base. Players generally slide feet-first, but sometimes also use a head-first technique. Since the defense generally expects a slide, sometimes a baserunner trying to avoid being tagged out will not slide directly towards the base, but rather to a side away from where the ball is coming, and then reach back to touch the base. It is reported that the famous Ty Cobb invented nine ways to slide into base.
