Nicknamed "The Terminator", Tom Henke was the amazing closer for the World Series winning Toronto Blue Jays in 1991. In baseball, a closing pitcher (or closer) is a relief pitcher who specializes in getting the final outs in a close game when their team is leading. The role is often assigned to a team's best reliever.
A Major League Baseball relief pitcher, Tom Henke was one of the most dominant and feared closers during the late 1980s and early 1990s, pitching for the Texas Rangers (1982-1984, 1993-1994), Toronto Blue Jays (1985-1992), and St. Louis Cardinals (1995). On the pitcher's mound, Henke was a commanding 6'-5" figure, easily recognizable by his large-rimmed glasses. He prevailed over batters with his hard fastball and threw a wicked forkball for the strikeout. Henke struck out 9.8 batters per 9 innings pitched over his career. He was soft-spoken and a real gentleman. It was my honor to meet him in 1991.
