Formula One Race Car Painting
This Formula 1 race image is a hand-painted acrylic painting, a preliminary design for a boys' wall mural. I painted the names of famous race car drivers, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser and Scott Bayton on three of the open-wheel race cars. The forth name, Watson, who is in the lead of this fictitious race, is the surname of the two boys for whom the mural was painted.
Major auto racing events have traditionally been named Grands Prix (plural form of Grand Prix) since the beginning of the 20th Century. Formally, for a race to be called a Grand Prix, it should have a race distance of at least 300 km. To date, more that 875 World Championship Grands Prix have been held in major cities around the world, including the famed Indianapolis 500 races. Mario Andretti, one of the most successful Americans in the history of the sport, is one of only two drivers to win races in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship and NASCAR. Andretti won the 1978 Formula One World Championship, four IndyCar titles and, to date, he remains the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), Daytona 500 (1967) and the Formula One World Championship. No American has won a Formula One race since Andretti's victory at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix. Bobby Unser is one of nine drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 three times and was the first driver to average more than 190 MPH at the Indianapolis 500. This painting is a small tribute to Scott Brayton who competed in 14 Indianapolis 500s and was killed in practice after qualifying for the pole position for the 1996 race.
